In New Brunswick, 53% of adults face literacy challenges, one of the highest rates in Canada. Strong literacy skills open the door to better jobs, better health, and fuller participation in community life. Every adult deserves that chance.

Why literacy matters

About

A Fredericton non-profit offering free, one-on-one tutoring to adults since 1978.

Mission

All adults have the opportunity to develop their literacy skills.

Vision

#696666

Adult Literacy Fredericton began in 1978 as the Literacy Council of Fredericton, inspired by literacy pioneer Dr. Frank Laubach and his challenge, “Each one teach one.” In the mid-1980s, the Challenger, Endeavour, and Voyager programs were added for more advanced learners, and in 2004 we introduced English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring to meet growing demand. In 2015, the organization was renamed Adult Literacy Fredericton (ALF). Today, we offer a free classroom and library for learners at 874 York Street, supported by more than 1,000 volunteer hours each year.
