Changing lives through literacy.

A Fredericton non-profit offering free, one-on-one tutoring to adults since 1978.

MissionChanging lives through literacy by offering free one-on-one tutoring to adults.
VisionAll adults have the opportunity to develop their literacy skills.

Our story

Adult Literacy Fredericton began in 1978 as the Literacy Council of Fredericton, inspired by literacy pioneer Dr. Frank Laubach and his challenge, “Each one teach one.” In the mid-1980s, the Challenger, Endeavour, and Voyager programs were added for more advanced learners, and in 2004 we introduced English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring to meet growing demand. In 2015, the organization was renamed Adult Literacy Fredericton (ALF). Today, we offer a free classroom and library for learners at 874 York Street, supported by more than 1,000 volunteer hours each year.
